Black Witch of Maatsuyker Island

The Black Witch of Maatsuyker Island is an exhibition of amulet and talisman paintings fabricated from flora and fauna of Maatsuyker Island, Tasmania.

The works examine the universal notion of human understanding and relationships to nature. The artist manifests the natural protective spirit of the island through the fictitious character of the Black Witch.  Historically, sailors and fishermen identified the island as Black Witch Island, perhaps believing in some dark magical force present in the area.  The works are inspired by the artist’s time on the island during a three-month Wilderness Arts Residency.

The work was exhibited at Tinning Street presents February 2015.
